Holiday Guide to New York
New York has become a very popular city break destination for the British traveller, our New York City break Guide will show you why New York is so popular. New York is a fantastic city to visit and thousands of tourists go to New York every year.
City break in New York offer the perfect combination of night life, shopping, culture and fun. With its world famous landmarks and the numerous references to it in film, television programmes and songs, New York is one of the most recognisable city break in the world. New York is also an ideal city break destination year round.
New York is a city that draws people back time and time again.
My approach to city break holidays is to plan for every hour of every day. I think it’s important to know in advance what you want to do so you don’t just drift around.
My wife and I fly to New York with British Airways and our transfer is handled by my cousin , he drives a limo. Both services are flawless as always. We have a great weather, which is nice and hot in mid July. We drop our bags at the hotel in where we stay, but there’s no time to unpack because we have a reservation for dinner at the China Town, just 30 minutes from our hotel.
The next day we always try and join a pre-booked Big Bus Tour starting at Broadway or Manhattan. Totally crazy as we are, we venture up to the open deck which is cooler. A guided tour of National September 11 Memorial & Museum, we have a schedule to keep so one stop later we leave the bus again to walk the High Line. This is an elevated railroad track now renovated with magnificent views of the New York skyline.
Next on the list is Macy’s for some retail therapy. We spend over an hour in the Michael Kors department and some shopping. Watches and jewelry ticked off list.
We have a reservation at Hard Rock Cafe, just off Times Square. It’s a wonderful restaurant to experience. Be warned, you must pre book and arrive with an empty stomach, portions are massive.
We are back on the Big Bus on a day three, which takes us up to Central Park. We swing by FAO Schwarz on Fifth Avenue, the oldest toy store in the US. It featured in the Tom Hanks film Big, with a dance sequence on a large keyboard. Then on to the Rockefeller Centre to watch the ice skating and ascend Top of the Rock, which has wonderful views of the skyline including the Empire State Building. We have dinner in Ellen’s Stardust Diner. You cannot pre book a table but I had factored in the likelihood of a queue, as I knew it to be a popular choice. The food was fantastic but this was compensated by the superb entertainment. The waiting staff is budding Broadway stars that, in between serving food, jump up on tables and sing songs from Broadway shows. Day four has us shopping for training shoes and some trendy gym wear.
Basketball is next – we head to Madison Square Garden, which is very central, to see NYC Knicks v Charlotte Hornets. I do find the sport of basketball very exciting, the intervals are filled with singing and dancing, and presents and sweets are thrown into the audience. We have Churrascaria Plataforma booked for the evening. It’s the original Brazilian steakhouse, and in my opinion, the best. Meat, meat and more meat. If you are a vegetarian don’t even walk on the same side of the street.
Fifth day we take a Harlem Gospel Tour. This is religious fervor, pure theatre, and the highlight of the holiday. Do not visit New York and miss this thrilling opportunity. And finally we do The Ride. It uses the city as a backdrop for a theatrical event that blurs the boundary between a bus tour and performance. We have front row seats as the landmarks become the backdrop to an intermittent live show for our benefit. It is enchanting, with the added thrill of the looks on people’s faces walking along the street as a stranger bursts into song or dance right next to them. It is priceless.
Back in the UK it feels cold after the heat in New York but what a fabulous few days, we have enjoyed every minute. It might have been my third time in New York, but I know we’ll be back again.
